We finished the course – how do we use the skills?

As we neared the end of our TESOL course, we asked God how He would like us to use this knowledge we had gained, as the last thing we wanted to do was to not use our skills.  We were led to start up English Corner, Chermside and sought the blessing of our church, Bridgeman Baptist Community Church, to run it as an outreach.  We have had students from over 55 different countries attend our classes over the past 6 years.  It has been a great time of learning about people from other cultures, making life-long friendships and providing the opportunity for people in the community to connect, possibly for the first time, with Christians.

We have been on the mission journey for about 8 years and God is shaping and equipping us for the future.  Our dream is to work in South East Asia, possibly Thailand, with children who have been trafficked and involved in the sex industry.  How God will use us, we don’t know – but one thing for sure is that things we have learned teaching English to people from other cultures has been a great experience that God can use and build upon. We can’t wait to see what God has in store!

Note from SWN:

You can use TESOL qualifications in Australia and overseas. If you would like to check out opportunites for helping with English Corners in Australia – maybe there is one near you! – try this website.

If you would like to do a TESOL course there are many available in Australia both through specialist providers or through universities and Bible Colleges. The best way to find one is to  surf the net. One of our partners, Intercultural Training Australia, offers them in various parts of Australia.
