Finding the Right Mission Agency

Last updated 22/5/2008
What can Second Wind People do?

A recent survey of mission agencies indicated that the majority of openings were in three vocational areas: education (kindergarten through university, secular or theological); health care (doctors, nurses, technicians); and management and finance.

However, office administrators, construction specialists, volunteers for orphanages, and house parents for schools are equally welcome. So are IT specialists, administrators, and people willing to take on routine tasks to free up front line workers with language skills.

Can you put together media presentations
? You could help others tell their story, or if you have a hobby, such as puppet making or drama, you might find an opening to train youth workers or lead a children’s program.

You can serve in short, medium or long term capacities
– both in Australia and overseas. You can support from home or you can go. You can use skills honed over years of service in your church and employment or you can take on a completely new role.

The main question that should be asked is "What needs to be done?" NOT "What can I do?" It’s amazing what people find they can do when they start thinking "outside the box".

Here are some typical opportunities:

You can be an educator, health care worker, IT professional, tradesman, dorm parent, accountant, lawyer, engineer, office worker, secretary , mechanic, agricultural consultant, vet, literacy worker or TESOL teacher, printer or media production team worker, musician, social worker, youth worker, hospital administrator, prayer team member. You could be a business consultant, micro enterprise trainer, or run a business. You could be a ships engineer or captain or a sailor. A child care, refugee, youth, or family worker or a sports coach. A craftsman, seamstress, handcraft specialist, weaver, potter …the possibilities are endless!

What should I look for in an agency?

Many good agencies are willing to help you fulfill your ministry goals. As you do your research, you will want to identify the agency that offers you the best fit. Questions to ask in your search include the following.

1. Do they offer ministry opportunities of the kind, and in the area, I’m interested in?

2. Do they understand the unique role second wind people can play in their overall ministry objectives?

3. Do I agree with the group’s theological position on basic biblical doctrines and especially the Great Commission?

4. Do they assist in raising/arranging financial support?

5. Have they demonstrated competence and integrity over a number of years?

6. Does my church know and approve of this agency?

7. Do I respect the other workers I know who are already working with them?

8. Do they provide member care for workers?

9. Do I have a strong sense of God’s leading to this particular agency?

Then, as you begin the application process, keep asking yourself these questions:

10. Do I like the way the mission operates, and

11. Do I resonate with the people I meet who are working for them?
