Imagine Mission Teams with only Evangelists and Church Planters

The phrase Behind every great man there is a great woman is well known. In mission terms it could be written as Behind every effective mission team there are effective support workers.  Not everyone is called to be a full-time evangelist or church planter.  There are many important support worker roles in which people are needed.

When we think of missionaries, it is often those with high profile roles that come to mind – evangelists, church planters, Bible teachers and medical missionaries.
However, God doesn’t equip everyone in these areas. To some he gives gifts and skills in administration, hospitality, finance, information technology or school teaching. People with these qualities can make vital contributions as support workers.

In fact a missionary team that has only evangelists, church planters, Bible teachers or medical staff will be unbalanced.

Several times while in Africa I saw people taken out of their ‘frontline’ ministries simply because there was no-one else to do the support work.
One team member arrived on the field as a Bible translator only to be asked to teach in a missionary kids’ boarding school for several months. All because the school desperately needed a chemistry teacher. If a teacher had come, not only would the students have benefited, but the Bible would have been translated so much more quickly & effectively!
At other times team members had to ‘fill in’ at our mission guesthouse because it had to keep functioning and no-one with a ‘calling’ had responded to the need.  How we rejoiced when a couple were clearly led to this role and others were able to continue their primary ministries.

So what could this mean for you?

If you are a school teacher God can use you to teach in a missionary kids’ boarding school. WEC’s school in Senegal currently needs teachers.

If you have a heart to care for kids God can use you as a house parent in a missionary kids’ boarding school.

If you like administration, God can use you for office work, on a field or in Australia. WEC’s International Office and the Australian Leadership Team need personal assistants at the moment.

If you enjoy hospitality and can encourage others, God can use you in a mission guesthouse. A field in Central Asia is looking for such a couple.

If you have accounting, bookkeeping or administrative skills, God can use you as a field treasurer or business manager. Right now in WEC Australia we need just that sort of help in our Support Services Team.

If you have IT/computer skills God can use you to help fields with IT needs or to teach computer skills to nationals. An African field is looking for short-termers  for their computer school.

If you like kids God can use you to help mission families with home schooling or in a missionary kids’ school as a dorm helper. WEC’s school in Senegal is asking for a male dorm helper.

As a support worker,

“You can be a part of and support a church planting field in a very real way that encourages other workers so they can continue to be involved in evangelism and discipleship amongst unreached peoples.”
(Central Asian field)
